What does a typical 'Dream Home' look like?

A recent report by Lombardo Homes surveyed 1,000 Americans to find out exactly what their ‘dream home’ looks like in 2024, and found that 94% of Americans don't currently live in their dream home. While Americans are dreaming big, 69% feel that their dream home doesn't exist yet (preferring to build a new home over renovating), and 52% don’t think their dream home will ever become a reality.

How Americans describe their dream house:

  • Specs: 3-4 bedrooms (3.8 bedrooms, on average), 3 bathrooms, nearly 4,600 square feet
  • Most important features: Large kitchen, big backyard/property, ideal location
  • Style: Contemporary was cited as the #1 preferred exterior, while modern and contemporary were the #1 and #2 preferred interior styles. Those surveyed overwhelmingly favored neutral colors for both interior and exterior, while fewer than 30% of respondents leaned towards bold paint colors, including black, charcoal, blues, and greens.
  • Dream home setting: 27% suburbs, 19% country, 18% city, 15% beach, 12% on the water, 9% in the mountains.
  • Location preferences: Only 56% of people said proximity to good schools is important for their dream home, compared to 79% who want a house close to shopping.
