When homeowners struggle to balance personal style with their luxury home renovation, they turn to the design style of professionals. Beyond prioritizing natural light, infusing ambient lighting, and optimizing living spaces, designers curate bespoke solutions to bring a homeowner's luxury home renovation idea to new heights.
But, what if money were no object in your next home improvement project?
In its 7th annual survey, 1stDibs asked the question to 624 interior design experts worldwide. After following their insights that predict and define the trends, we're eager to learn about the most widely recommended solutions when the budget wasn't a factor. Sure, high-end appliances can make a gourmet kitchen, and of course, natural stone and other architectural features add a touch of elegance, but what features are interior designers really suggesting to help their clients achieve functional spaces with a touch of luxury?
More than half of interior designers included in the research expect that kitchens will be the most requested room to redesign in 2024, tracking with the 56% we saw estimated in 2023. Furthermore, as 90% of companies anticipate a return-to-office mandate by the end of the year, designers anticipate a significant drop in home office design. Overtaking offices, they predict to see more bathroom redesigns and transitional indoor/outdoor space enhancements.
What would you buy for your dream renovation?
Letting us in on the inside scoop, 1stDibs explored the lives of the rich and famous by way of their top-tier interior designers. "If budgets had no cap, storage, and fashion seemed to be top-of-mind for interior designers," the report shares. "Much of what we saw trending on social media last year may no longer be embraced," adds Anthony Barzilay Freund, Editorial Director, 1stDibs.
The designers expanded, citing the following projects as being popular for the most elite remodels:
At the forefront of designer recommendations is the integration of lavish walk-in closets. A staggering 57% of designers work with their clients to make the most of square footage and deliver ample storage space. When there's no budget, we know how these closets can epitomize both practicality and opulence.
Features of luxury closets include:
- Custom cabinetry, integrated lighting, high-quality materials, specialized storage solutions (think: footwear, handbags, hats, and jewelry), heated floors, built-in mirrors, seating areas, smart technology integration with voice commands, accessory displays, island units with much-needed counter space, valet rods, and pull-out ironing boards.
Following closely behind are enhancements to entertainment spaces. 53% of designers advocate for guest suites which allows homeowners to accommodate overnight visitors in a stylish, dedicated guest space.
Additionally, 43% suggest the inclusion of outdoor kitchens, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living spaces for unparalleled hosting while entertaining guests.
In an era dominated by digital media consumption, the allure of a traditional library endures. A notable 40% of designers recommend incorporating libraries into homes when there's extra space, emphasizing the timeless charm and intellectual ambiance they evoke.
This preference surpasses the appeal of modern entertainment amenities like movie theaters or media rooms, which garner recommendations from only 31% of designers.
Least Recommended Upgrades
While the realm of limitless budgets fosters creativity when it comes to luxury renovations and interior design, some home improvement solutions remain niche:
- Bowling Alleys: While it's nice for a family gathering, unconventional additions like bowling alleys receive limited enthusiasm from designers, indicating that while extravagance is embraced, practicality and relevance to everyday life remain paramount for their clients.
- Pet Spas: Similarly, pet spas complete with glass doors and shower heads also receive limited enthusiasm from designers. Votes for an out-of-home doggie spa day!
