Oh, how we love this time of year! Those precious months when we're still highly motivated to clean up our home's exterior and make the most of our outdoor living spaces. As the weather starts to improve, take a closer look at your deck surfaces to ensure they're ready for outdoor enjoyment. From deep cleaning to structural maintenance or staining, these are tasks you can begin now. Whatever the needs, addressing deck maintenance will extend the lifespan of your deck and ensure your outdoor space is a part of your home you can really enjoy.
1. Inspect the Deck
- Look for signs of wear and tear, such as rotting wood, loose deck boards, loose deck railings, protruding nails or deck screws. Addressing these issues early on will prevent further damage and ensure a smooth refinishing process.
- Does it feel bouncy? Consider the structural integrity. Take note of any structural issues that may need professional attention, or plan to reinforce problem areas. Contact a pro if necessary.
2. Plan Your Project
- Determine your course of action. Does your deck refresh just involve cleaning? Or, are you making repairs? Will you need replacement deck boards? And, what is the cost of replacement boards? Are you planning to remove an existing coat of paint, or putting down fresh weatherproofing to protect a wooden deck? Whatever you have in mind, make a plan for yourself.
- Gather the tools and materials you need for your job. Having the supplies at your fingertips makes the process of refreshing a deck easier (even if you can't start on the project right away).
- Items that might be on your list: A new deck finish (water-based stain, paint, or sealant, if necessary), a power washer, brushes and paint rollers, deck screws, sandpaper or a palm sander, and any additional tools or accessories needed for the job.
3. Clean the Surface
- Remove debris, leaves, and dirt from the deck using a broom or leaf blower.
- Scrub the surface with a deck cleaning solution to remove stains, mold, and mildew. If build-up is bad, remember that annual cleanings
- If you have composite deck boards, another cleaning method to consider is using a pressure washer with deck cleaner to remove mold and other build-up.
4. Repair Damaged Areas
- Replace any rotten, warped or damaged boards, and tighten any loose screws or nails.
- Pay special attention to areas that are prone to water damage, such as near the edges of the deck or around railings. Proper repairs will not only improve the appearance of your deck but also prevent further deterioration over time.
5. Pressure Wash the Surface
- If your deck needs a fresh coat of stain or paint, start by pressure washing the surface to remove any worn and peeling finish. Stick to a wide-angle stream, and hold the nozzle at a 45-degree angle to help the water get below the peeling finish. Piercing jet streams can damage a wood deck.
- Allow the deck to dry completely before proceeding any further—it needs to be completely dry before you apply stain or paint.
- Sanding isn't a must-do, but it can help further prepare a weathered deck for refinishing. Passing over each deck board (along the wood grain) with a power sander can smooth irregularities in older deck boards, remove stubborn bits of old paint and deck stain, and promote good adhesion.
- Deck strippers can also be helpful if you're trying to remove old stain or paint. Keep in mind that most are chemical strippers, so you should wear extra protection—eye protection, long layers, and a mask for safety.
6. Choose Your Finish
- Selecting the right finish for your deck is crucial for achieving the desired look and protecting the wood from the elements. Consider factors such as durability, color preference, and any regular maintenance requirements when choosing between stain, paint, or a clear sealant.
- Different finishes offer varying levels of protection against UV rays, moisture, and foot traffic. Take your time to research your options and choose a finish that best suits your aesthetic preferences and lifestyle.
7. Plan Your Schedule
- Take a look at your calendar. When can you dedicate time to give your deck a new lease on life? Depending on the size of your entire deck and the extent of the repairs needed, the deck refinishing process may take several days to complete. Evaluate your schedule and set aside dedicated time for each step of the project, from cleaning and repairing the deck to applying the finish and allowing it to dry properly.
- Consider enlisting the help of friends or family members to make the process more manageable and enjoyable.
