Bet you wish you knew that removing superglue from glass can be done using a single, simple household item.

“When it comes to removing superglue, it is usually best to allow the product to dry before removing it to avoid mistakenly spreading the wet product from one surface to another or getting it on your skin," recommends Ashanti McKissic, Product Expert at The Flex Seal Family of Products. "After the superglue is dry, products like acetone can be used to aid in the removal process. Apply liberally and allow it to soak. You could even use warm, soapy water. Ultimately, a fingernail or a razor blade will be necessary to gently scrape the loosened glue from the surface of the glass.”

Whether you got superglue on a glass cooktop, glass-topped coffee table, or a window in your home, follow these steps for easy superglue removal.

1. Let the Excess Glue Dry on the Glass Surface

  • If you try to clean the super glue before it dries, it can easily smear and become more challenging to remove. (It can also transfer to your skin—and if it already did, start with this tutorial on how to get the glue off skin before cleaning the glass.)
  • If you're looking at this tutorial because you have superglue on your eyeglasses, think twice about what you use to scrape. Glasses have plastic lenses which are more easily damaged.

2. Apply Acetone or Nail Polish Remover to a Cotton Ball

  • Acetone (or acetone nail polish remover) is a great household ingredient that gets instant adhesive like superglue from off glass. As a glue solvent, it's strong enough to break through superglue bond, and a safe, effective solution for removing crazy glue from glass surfaces.

3. Soak the Spot on the Glass

  • As McKissic shares, you can moisten an area with warm, soapy water, but on a vertical pane of glass it can be easier to use acetone. Less drippy and quick to dry!
  • Apply the acetone-soaked cotton ball directly to the dried superglue stain. Hold it in place for 30 seconds.

4. Chip Away the Glue

  • Use a plastic razor blade or the edge of a credit card to carefully scrape away the softened glue.
  • Exercise caution if you're choosing sharp tools like metal razor blades to avoid injury and scratches. Hold it at a low angle to the glass to prevent scratches.

5. Clean the Surface With Glass Cleaner

  • Once the glue is removed, clean the glass with a glass cleaner to eliminate any residue.
  • Polish the glass with a soft, clean cloth for a clear finish.

Alternatives to Acetone

If you need to clean glass without acetone, the following solutions can also help remove strong adhesives:

  • Isopropyl alcohol. Household rubbing alcohol solution works well, as do most alcohol-based products.
  • White vinegar
  • Cooking oil. Yet another use for vegetable oil!
  • Lemon juice. The acid in lemons will cut into the glue.
  • Warm water with mild soap
  • Commercial glue removers
