When it comes to flooring, homeowners want the beauty of wood but are right to worry about scratches and potential water damage. As a home filled with pets and kids, we resonate with this in a big way. That’s why Mohawk made us look twice when they announced SolidTech R. Yes, it looks like wood, but it’s not. Instead, it’s made with recycled single-use plastic bottles and natural stone — you read that right, stone.

What is SPC Flooring?

SPC stands for Stone Plastic/Polymer Composite, and it’s one of the most durable and innovative flooring materials available today. Unlike traditional hardwood or vinyl, it has a core made from a mix of natural limestone powder, recycled plastic, and stabilizers. This unique core provides incredible strength and stability. Conveniently, it's also resistant to water, scratches, and dents.

The perks keep coming. SPC flooring is also known for its realistic wood-look designs and easy maintenance. It combines the aesthetic appeal we want with the resilience of stone.

Mohawk took the concept of SPC flooring and engineered it one step further. "For SolidTech R, Mohawk kept the stone but replaced all the PVC with 100% recycled single-use plastic. So, we really developed a next-gen core," shared Adam Ward, Mohawk's vice president of product management, resilient. "They kept stone as the primary building block because it is an abundant resource and one resilient flooring’s most popular platforms. They saw that the opportunity to innovate was in the polymer. Plus, recycled PET adds even more stability and ensures 100% waterproof performance. This advanced core is designed to be long lasting and easy to maintain."

Durable, Sustainable, and Built for Real Life

SolidTech R isn’t just flooring; it’s a solution to some of the most common household challenges. Its stone-based core is what makes it stand out. Unlike traditional wood floors, it doesn’t warp or buckle under pressure, making it perfect for kitchens, basements, and anywhere spills happen. What’s more, every square foot of this flooring contains the equivalent of 20 recycled plastic bottles (recycling's our jam).

The durability doesn’t stop there. SolidTech R offers three times more scratch resistance than many other flooring options. Mohawk launched with a range of colorways — natural woods, warm browns, and even a gray, and if we had to do our floors over again, we'd be hard pressed to choose any other product.
