Spray paint has always been a go-to solution for our projects, but using traditional formulas come with a few tradeoffs: strong fumes and lingering odors, hard to clean overspray, and temperature limitations (we can’t use traditional spray paint during cold winters).
For these reasons, I was excited to hear about Krylon Harmony®, a new option that’s nonflammable, can be used indoors, and cleans up with soap and water.
What makes Krylon Harmony different?
The biggest change is what’s inside the can. Harmony spray paint uses a water-based formula instead of a solvent-based formula. Despite the formula change, the product still works on a range of surfaces including wood, metal, plastic, laminate, masonry, concrete, wicker, ceramic and glass. It also has strong adhesion and the spray application still provides smooth, even coverage.
Furthermore, the formula is nonflammable and has a low-odor formula compared with traditional solvent-based paint. It’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions, which offers homeowners flexibility to use the product for projects inside the home. Krylon still recommends using Harmony in a well-ventilated area.
By design, the can also produces less overspray than traditional solvent-based paint, which can make it easier to keep the surrounding area cleaner. And unlike traditional products, you can easily clean up any overspray with soap and water while the paint is still wet.
Available in Three Finishes, 16 Colors
Krylon’s traditional spray paint lineup doesn’t shy from color, so naturally, neither does Harmony. The new formula launched with 16 colors from bold to earthy neutral, across gloss, satin and matte finishes:
- Gloss: Ruby Slippers, Tangerine, Mossy Meadow
- Satin: Black Raven, Arctic White, Ember, Grove Green, Soft Sage, Wineberry, Icy Mist
- Matte: Silver Fern, Sandstone, Umber, Fossil Gray, Cool Sand, Great Lakes
Is Harmony a better choice for indoor spray-painting projects?
For some homeowners, this may be the biggest reason to pay attention to Harmony. Harmony is designed for interior and exterior use, which can make certain projects more practical during colder months or when outdoor conditions aren't cooperating.

If you have a garage that gets too cold in winter, live in an apartment without a convenient outdoor workspace or simply don't want a strong paint smell lingering around a project, the water-based formula offers a different way to approach spray painting.
That doesn’t mean you should spray paint in a closed room—even roll-on acrylic wall paints recommend ventilation during application. Open a window and use a fan to help circulate odors as the spray paint dries.
How long does Krylon Harmony take to dry?
Krylon lists Harmony as dry to the touch in about one hour and dry to handle in about four hours. Full cure takes longer, just like regular spray paint, so be mindful of how well it has dried factoring in humidity before you put it to heavy use.
Can you clean Krylon Harmony with water?
Yes—water-based paints for the win! While Harmony is still wet, you can clean up with soap and water. Once the paint has dried, it becomes much harder to remove, so it's worth cleaning tools, overspray, and accidental drips right away.
