Specialized zones are changing how designers and homeowners approach kitchen design. Whether they're focused on incorporating extra space for food prep or a smoothie bar, or keeping up with a busy household, considering how appliances can maximize the functionality of these niche areas is also important.

"Dishwashers, ovens, and refrigerators are my favorite to double up on to help increase the functionality of a kitchen," shares Thom Filicia as he comments on trends cited in the NKBA 2025 Kitchen Trends Report. While double ovens and refrigerators have long been a staple in busy kitchens, making cupboard space for dual dishwashers has often come at a premium. Nonetheless, if you're designing your kitchen and entertaining space to accommodate multiple zones, having two dishwashers makes a lot of sense.

"As dishwashers get more powerful, it is even easier to incorporate a second into your space," notes Celerie Kemble. "They are a great place to hide dirty plates." Along the same lines, she also emphasizes the benefit of doubling up on kitchen sinks, such as a scullery sink and a cooking sink. Michel Smith Boyd agrees, adding "Two sinks are non-negotiable, [and] a secondary dishwasher drawer is ideal for efficiency."

Make the Most of Your Space With These Dishwashers

Two full-sized dishwashers is still a lot for some households. Fortunately, the most reliable brands are approaching the trend with a fresh perspective, and it's just a matter of time before more companies join the lineup.

Compact drawer dishwashers, slimline dishwashers, and even in-sink integrated dishwashers make it easier for consumers to integrate an extra dishwasher where it matters most.

  • Bosch's 800 Series dishwashers are only 18" wide, perfect if you need to save space in a kitchen island or near your coffee station.
  • CAFÉ released a single-drawer dishwasher this year. This dirty dish drawer is suitable not only for the scullery kitchen or bar area, but as a secondary, efficient appliance for those days you have a smaller load of dishes. They also have a double-drawer model; we've seen it in person and it is nice.
  • FOTILE's 2-in-1 in-sink dishwasher is highly functional and would be great for a home bar or prep station.

Smart Home Technology is Still Top of Mind

"Integrating smart home technology into the kitchen can add a modern touch of luxury," shared a respondent in NKBA's report. While designers specifically expect that WiFi-connected and voice-activated dishwashers will be demanded more from manufacturers, they also highlighted that overall, kitchens with connected technology and smart appliances are becoming standard. Functionality extends beyond spacial design, it now considers how consumers can be smart with smart technology.
