As we move into the new year, garage spaces continues to evolve from a mere storage spaces into usable spaces that help enhances daily living. "At Garage Living, we’ve observed key trends shaping garage transformations," shared Aaron Cash, President & Co-Founder of Garage Living. Cash and his team live and breathe garage design. Because trends vary so much with changes in consumer behavior and technology, we asked him to share insights on popular trends and scenarios that they see everyday.

1. EV-Ready Garages

"With electric vehicles becoming mainstream, the garage must adapt to support this shift. Homeowners are prioritizing EV-friendly designs."

Trends include: In 2025, Cash foresees more garages being upgraded with EV charging stations, improved electrical infrastructure, and layouts that accommodate multiple charging ports. Preparing for an all-electric future is no longer optional, it’s essential.

Even if you're not planning to get an EV this year, if you're investing in other electrical system upgrades, it's the perfect time to be proactive. Discuss with your electrician what it would take to have your home's panel ready for adoption in the next decade.

2. Multi-Purpose Spaces

"Today’s garage isn’t just for cars. Homeowners look to use the square footage for fitness, hobbies, and even entertaining."

Trends include: Cash reports seeing garages transformed into hybrid spaces which combine car storage with home gyms, workshops, or relaxation zones. Custom garage flooring, consideration to natural light and ceiling lights, and cabinet storage turn the garage into a functional space that feels like an extension of the home.

3. Smart Garage Integration

"Technology is making the garage smarter, safer, and more convenient than ever before."

Trends include: Automated garage doors, app-controlled security systems, and smart lighting are all worth considering, according to Cash. These systems are becoming more standard, offering homeowners convenience while enhancing security and functionality.

4. Elevated Aesthetics

"Gone are the days of unfinished concrete floors and walls cluttered by seasonal items. Homeowners want garages that match the quality and design of their interiors."

Trends include: Sleek finishes like polyaspartic flooring, custom cabinetry, and slatwall storage systems that maximize vertical space are in high demand. Bold colors and modern materials elevate the garage’s visual appeal, making it a truly livable space and a showpiece.

5. Sustainability in Garage Design

"Sustainability is more than a trend, it’s a responsibility. The garage is no exception."

Trends include: Homeowners are choosing eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable construction practices. Recycling systems and solar power integration are becoming popular additions in a garage makeover.

6. Personalized Storage Solutions

"A well-organized garage is one that caters to the homeowner’s unique needs." And boy, oh boy, are there are a lot of additional storage options to consider. We invested in both overhead storage racks and built-in storage systems last year, with more planned for this summer.

Trends include: From tailored storage bins for sports equipment to bespoke custom cabinets for tools, personalization is key. Homeowners are opting to have organized spaces that fit their specific lifestyles and interests.

7. Climate-Controlled Garages

"The garage is becoming a more versatile space, and climate control is critical for comfort and preservation." If you don't have an insulated garage, consider how it would change your space.

Trends include: Cash notes that garage insulation, and heating and cooling systems are increasingly included in garage remodels. Insulating your garage walls can make the space usable year-round and protect valuable items from extreme temperatures.

8. Bold Flooring Choices

"The floor sets the tone for the entire garage. It’s no surprise that homeowners are investing in high-quality, durable, and stylish options."

Trends include: Polyaspartic coatings with bold colors and custom designs are making a statement. These options combine durability with a touch of luxury.

9. Garages as Extensions of Living Spaces

"The line between indoor and outdoor living is blurring, and the garage plays a pivotal role in this transition."

Trends include: Glass doors, improved lighting, and comfortable furniture are helping garages double as entertaining spaces. This trend aligns with the growing desire for seamless indoor-outdoor connectivity.

10. Aging-in-Place Garage Design

"As homeowners plan for the future, garages are being designed with accessibility in mind."

Trends include: Features like non-slip flooring, wider doorways, and easy-to-use storage systems improve garage functionality and make it a safer space for all ages and abilities.
